  • Boston Celtics Unveil New Alternate Uniforms (National Basketball Association)
    November 21, 2005
For the first time in the history of the Boston Celtics franchise, the team is adding a second road uniform that blends the best elements of traditional design with a distinctive contemporary look. Recognizing the NBA trend of issuing both “throwback” and “redesigned” jerseys, the Celtics, who already play in “throwback” jerseys, have created a look that captures the energy of today’s team. On Friday, November 25th, when the Boston Celtics host the Charlotte Bobcats at the TD Banknorth Garden, the team will unveil their new secondary road uniforms for the hometown fans. Thereafter, the new uniform will be worn for select road games only. The body of the uniform will remain green, like the existing road uniform, however the design elements are distinctly different. Inspired by the 1946-48 uniforms, they pay tribute to the Celtics’ long and storied history, while modernizing the look.

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "Academy Awards"
    November 17, 2005
In 1968, Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes and trainer Ernie Biggs decided to change the team's uniforms. They added names on the backs of the jerseys, put stripes on the sleeves, and, in a football first, decided to reward players who made big plays by putting a little decal on their helmets, sort of like getting a gold star from the teacher. Nearly 40 years later, Hayes is remembered primarily as a blowhard who punched out an opposing player on national TV (preserved for posterity on video), and Biggs is barely a footnote. But their innovation -- the helmet merit decal, or award decal, or pride decal, as it's variously called -- has spread throughout college football. In some cases, such as Ohio State's cluster of buckeye leaves and Florida State's tomahawk (which is awarded according to a complex formula), the merit decals are at least as important to the uniform's overall look as the main helmet design itself.

  • ESPN.com - "Making a Number for Themselves"
    November 2, 2006
There was a time not so long ago when a number in the teens predicted an early training camp demise for a wide receiver. If you didn't get one of those choice numbers in the 80s, chances were -- well, your chances weren't very good. That was then and this is now in today's NFL: Randy Moss, once the preeminent No. 84, is sporting No. 18 for the Silver and Black. Plaxico Burress, the erstwhile No. 80 in Pittsburgh, is a stylish No. 17 for the Giants. Even Jerry Rice, the most decorated wide receiver ever -- the ultimate No. 80 -- wore No. 19 in his final days with the Broncos.

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "The Uni Watch NBA Preview"
    November 01, 2005
OK, enough already with all the chatter about the NBA's off-court dress code. A tailored suit, a track suit, a birthday suit -- whatever. When it comes to the NBA, Uni Watch's only concern is what we see on the court. So with the season tipping off Tuesday night, here's what you can expect to see this season (with a big shout-out to Matt Bourne and Christopher Arena at NBA central, who provided Uni Watch with invaluable assistance)...
