  • Golden Baseball League - "Questions Come When Uniforms Are Selling Point"
    June 25, 2006
Corporate sponsorship and baseball tradition have collided in, of all places, an obscure second-year independent baseball league with two local franchises. The Golden Baseball League has sold advertising space on its jerseys, uncharted territory for most pro sports leagues and a move that borders on sacrilege according to baseball purists. Players and coaches from each of the league's six teams are wearing an AlphaFlex patch on a sleeve of their uniforms according to terms of a two-year, $380,000 deal the league reached with Sierra Life Sciences, a Reno-based maker of dietary supplements.

  • Motor City Reapers Join the GLIFL (Great Lakes Indoor Football League)
    June 23, 2006
The GLIFL was built as a league that all indoor football fans could enjoy. Part of that enjoyment includes local rivalries for fans to get excited about. Announcing the Motor City Reapers as the league’s third 2007 expansion team only adds to that. In addition to the Port Huron Pirates, Battle Creek Crunch, and Muskegon Thunder, Motor City gives the league a strong presence in Michigan with four teams. The Reapers join the league with Muskegon and the Chesapeake (Maryland) Tide to give the GLIFL nine member franchises.  Mike Zak, the owner of the Reapers, adds another owner to the GLIFL ranks with extensive football experience. Local to the Detroit area, he channeled his passion for football as a fan of the Detroit Drive in the early 1990s to owning the Motor City Wart Hogs of the MLFA. “It was time to take the step up to the professional ranks,” said Zak. “I feel comfortable with the direction of the league, and I like the openness of league management. They help their owners have a strong football team on and off the field.”

  • U. of Oregon Unveils New Football Uniforms (NCAA)
    June 22, 2006
No longer do all college football uniforms resemble your gym teacher's Sunday finest. At Oregon, they look hatched from an alien pod sent to Earth to seek first downs and souvenir sales.  But that is the Ducks' point. While the Queen Marys of the football world have steamed along in the same uniforms since World War II -- a Penn State official said a change would distress its fans -- Oregon is a cigarette boat speeding past the bluebloods.  The Ducks' fall collection debuted Wednesday morning at Oregon's Casanova Center: four different jerseys, four pants and three helmets. The resulting innovations and ensemble possibilities, 48 of them in all, make Oregon the most unusually outfitted and fussed-over team in the nation. And that is exactly what the Ducks want to be.

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "Not-So-Hot Pockets"
    June 22, 2006
You think you have it rough? Consider the lot of poor Uni Watch, who for the past few weeks has had the unpleasant task of staring endlessly at MLB players' posteriors. The reason for that, of course, is the latest stylistic affectation spreading throughout big league ballparks: the inside-out pants pocket. It's not a brand-new trend, but it really has picked up steam this season, effectively turning Uni Watch into Pocket Watch.

  • Swarthmore College Unveils "The Phoenix" As New Mascot (NCAA)
    June 12, 2006
Beginning this fall, Swarthmore College will have its first ever mascot: the phoenix. Campus voting and an e-mail poll of alumni both reached the same conclusion, choosing the mythical bird over three other candidates and a "none of the above" option.   With the support of the Department of Physical Education and Athletics, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) led an initiative over the past academic year to gauge interest in the creation of a mascot. The effort was also boosted by the Garnet Club, formed in 2004 to organize pre-game tailgates, post-game bonfires, and fan buses to Haverford-Swarthmore games and conference championship games. The new mascot will not replace "The Garnet" as the name of Swarthmore's inter-collegiate athletic teams.
